Having felt the need of educating the rural poor, late Rev. Fr. Ligouri DSouza, the Parish of Sacred Heart Church, Ajekar invited the Bethany Sisters in 1964 to open a High School in his Parish. Co education in schools run by the Religious Sisters was unknown in those days. Hence special permission was obtained from the church authorities for such a venture.

Rev. Fr. Ligouri DSouza had three spacious rooms built in collaboration with the people for classrooms and handed over the project to the Bethany Sisters who arrived at Ajekar in June1964. They opened class VIII on 22-06-1964. They were given some land by Karkal Attur Parish through the generosity of Rt. Rev. Dr. Raymond DMello, the then Bishop of  Mangalore Diocese.

In 1972 a Technical School was started. Building was put up for the purpose with the generous help of Misereor – West Germany. Unfortunately it was discontinued later.

With a grateful heart to God and  all the sisters who served right from its beginning, the school proudly celebrates its Golden Jubilee in 2014. The school has prepared 12,500 students in these 50 years to find a respectful place in the family and society. Jyothi High School, Ajekar is very much proud of its vast band of ex-students  spread far and in the world in high positions. They are walking with lighted lamps lit by the sisters and teachers of their Alma Mater.

The management and the staff felt the need to bring together all these scattered students  once again by opening Alumni Association. This dream came true on 14-12-2012 when it was opened in the presence of a august gathering present to witness the Annual Day of the school. Golden Jubilee Memorial multipurpose mini hall is under construction in collaboration with the ex-students.
